Upper Mustang Trek

Mustang falls in the southern edge of the Tibetan highland and is enclosed by above 35 peaks ranging from 2,815 m to 3,780 m. Also, Upper Mustang trekking path consists of deserted view, vertical rock-strewn track which rewards you with the views

of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna, Tukche peak, Mustang Himal, Tilicho peak, Arniko Chuli and loads of other arresting peaks. Mustang is a restricted area which requires trekking permit via a registered trekking agency. The Himalayan valley situated in the northern central section of Nepal and over the Kaligandaki River and it is separated into 2 regions -Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang.

Upper Mustang trek is one of Nepal's most outstanding trekking path, which presents startling mountain landscape including Annapurna I (8091 m) and Dhaulagiri (8167 m). Upper Mustang trek will also presents a chance to explore around the core incient city, Lo-Mangthang which in fact is a difficult trek due to towering height approximately 3800 m, uncovered terrain which gets frequent strong winds. The entire area is well-known for its out-of-the-way caves, monasteries and desolate conditions. The inhabitants of the Upper Mustang are the Lobas, referred as Lo. Day 01 Arriving in Kathmandu (1,350 m/4,428 Ft)

Our airport representatives will come to receive you at Tribhuvan International airport Kathmandu with displaying your name on Musical Adventure Trekking signboard at arrival gate of international terminal then you will be driven to hotel in private vehicle.

Day 02 Cultural excursion around Kathmandu valley

After breakfast at your hotel, Musical Adventure Trekking will provides private vehicles and look around Kathmandu valley with guide. Your guide will take in middle of valley and show you depth of Hinduism and Buddhism with great history. First we will drive 6km east from thamel to Boudhanath stupa, 9 storey colorful largest Buddhist stupa in the world and great places to observe Buddhism in the valley. After that drive continuous to Pashupatinath temple which more known as home of holy man and perfect places to take photos of Shadu’s. The holy bagmati river follows midst of pashupati complex and the death body regular cremated aside of river on the ghat, you often see people taking bath on the holy river. We also visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square, which is a collection of pagoda and shikhara – style temples grouped around a fifty-five-window palace of brick and wood. The attraction of the Bhaktapur Durbar Square are the the Lion gate, the Golden gate, the Palace of fifty five windows, art galleries, the Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla. After visiting these places drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 03 Kathmandu to Pokhara (850 m/2,788 Ft & 8 hrs drive)

Today your journey heading to Pokhara, we head off from hotel at 6:30 am after breakfast and bus departure at 7:am from Kantipath Kathmandu. The deluxe bus takes 7hrs to reach pokhara with few time stopping along prithivi highway. Drive will presents countryside of Nepal with landscapes, mountain and villages.

Day 04 Pokhara to Kagbeni (2,900 m/9,514 Ft & 4 hrs trek) via Jomsom

You will have early breakfast at hotel before set off from hotel to Pokhara airports, according to flight schedule fly to Jomsom from Pokhara. As soon as flight take-off from Pokhara, flight goes across Kali Gandaki valley with magnificent view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri himalayan range. Jomsom airport set on brown plateau at bottom of Himalayas on bank of holy Kali Gandaki River. Now actual trek starts from Jomsom on bank of river with view of magnificent Himalaya and passing village with cultural excursion. We try to complete our trek from Jomsom to Kagbeni before mid day, these area is very windy area. After lunch at Kagbeni, walk into the beautiful Kagbeni village and we might trek to Tirigaon for short hike.

Day 05 Kagbeni to Chele/Tsaile (3,100 m/10,170 Ft &6 hrs trek)

The trail starts across the villages check special permits end of picturesque Tibet style village. Then sandy and windy flat plain path goes on plateau with view of Nilgiri mountain formation of mud to Tangbe and gentle descend to Chhusang. Just right before cross bridge you will see beautiful cave on cliff, colourful grave of lamas. Now head on with ascending up to Chaile.

Day 06 Chele to Syanboche (3,800 m/12,467 Ft & 6 hrs trek)

From starts of trek, we are climbing up, as going higher, you will see closer view of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang, Thorong peak and wider view of plateau. After lunch at samar village short descend to river then tiny ascend uphill bring us at junction then, we take a eastern trail and again climb-up through juniper scrubs to Yamdo La (3,600 m). From here trail drop down with tiny goat trail with rolling paved, often see great view of ravine, wind erosion murals on mount. The Chhugsi cave, the ancient monastery inside the cave. The monks told us "Guru Ringpoche had done meditation while traveling to Tibet". There are amazing painting on the wall of monastery. Now uphill trail passing on bushes in between mount to small Syanboche village.

Day 07 Syanboche to Dhakmar (3,510 m/11,515 Ft & 6 hrs trek)

Short climb up bring us at ridge above the village, it will offers massive view of other side of valley, flat plain trail onward to Ghiling, a village with Buddhist monastery. Now street leads other sides of Jhaite on wilderness to over the mountain called Nyi La Pass. Now descend to little valley, where Ghami is set on on bank of river, after lunch, trek down and cross the river then pass longest colorful mani wall with 300 m long in Nepal. It believed to be intestine of demon. As your journey continuous to Drakmar village red and white murals on cliffs that believed to be blood of the demond.

Day 08 Dhakmar to Charang (3,560 m/11,679 Ft & 3-4hrs trek)

After breakfast, we trek back to main trail called "Kaligandaki Corridor" with switch-back climb up to ridge. The summit offers beautiful view of Ghami village and unique landscapes. From the pass trek descend aside of jeep track to Tsarang village. Before entering to Charang village, take a photo of red and white painted buddhist stupa. Will easily spend half day with exploring Tsarang village. The old fort, Fortress, monastery and chhorten are the main attraction of the Tsarang village.

Day 09 Charang to Lo Manthang (3,850 m/12,631 Ft & 5-6 hrs trek)

After leaving Tsarang village, trek continue along farming plot then cross the suspension bridge to Marang village. It will be scenic walk on the scrubs with sights of hillock. Ghar Gompa is first monastery in upper mustang which is built by Indian Buddhist Guru on way to Tibet in 8th century. Main temple, red color chhorten, hostel for monks and the exceptional view of the landscapes and mountains are the attraction of the Ghar Gompa. After here trail lead gradual up to the ridge. From the ridge sights splendor view capital of Upper Mustang called "Lo-manthang" and sarrounding peaks. Tallest house with grey color paint is palace where Royal family live. Now trail descend and cross the stream and then arrive Lomanthang.

Lo-manthang, the ancient city is found by former gyelpo Ame Pal in 13th century. The village still carry wealthy ancient culture with practicing Tibetan Buddhism. Many monasteries and caves are around the wall-city and nearby villages. West of village has 26 Ft high city wall of mud and stone then 176 house, numerous monasteries, chhorten and stupa are inside the city. There are few monasteries namely Choede gompa, Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, Choede Gompa and Art Museum.

Choede Gompa

Choede Gompa is one of the biggest Buddhist monastery in Lomanthang, more than 100 young monks are practicing Buddhism.Choede Monastery is organizer of the Mustang Tiji Festival. The Choede situated north east of Royal Palace, it has couple of compartment, beautiful accommodation for tourist, main temple where do daily puja, class room and hostel. They believed main temple found in 13th century. New building class room and accommodation are built with help of india government in different time.

Jampa Lhakhang

4 storey Jampa Lkakhang gompa situated right behind the palace of Gyelpo, travelers are allowed to visit 3rd floor of gompa and get marvelous view of landscapes and village. The gompa has huge statue of Maitreya Buddha which consider as future Buddha.

Thubchen Gompa

Thubchen consider as oldest monasteries among them in Lomanthang. Three big statue of the Padmasambhava (Indian Buddhist ascetic), Manjushree (goddess of wisdom) are inside the gompa and daily ritual do in front of the statue of the god and goddess. Beautiful wall painting of mandala and image of various gods are the another reason to visit Thubchen Gompa.

The small room inside the Choede monastery has Tibetan art gallery (Museum) where can see antique of Lobhas.

Day 10 Explore Chhoser cave, Nifu Cave, Konchok Ling Cave, John Cave & 7-8 hrs trek) or 3-4 hrs drive

Konchok Ling Cave

Newly discovery cave in desolate terrain at forbidden kingdom of Nepal but believed to be at leat 700 years old. The cave is explored in 2007 by young local boy (Shepherd). The cave is surrounded with carved mount and barren landscapes, cave has many separate room, it have been used as living, stored room, meditation, chham, retreat or sheltered. Beautiful god and goddess image painted on wall of the cave, it looks very old. Konchong Ling cave can do day trip from Lomanthang, it is quite far by walking from Lomanthang, wiser to do by jeep drive half way then trek to cave through mound ridge and climbing on the cliff with help of fixed rope. Trekker's need to be feet to climb up on the cliff and climb down to the cave. The surrounding view of landscapes is amazing.

Ni Fu Cave Aka Nymphu Gompa

The white and red painted half cave monastery lies at bottom of the wind carved erosion mount at Chhoser village. The local believe one of the king use cave for meditation and retreat then later on cave extern and build the gompa. Inner part still cave and only allow to use for monks for meditation propose.

Chhoser Cave Aka John Cave

The five storeys Chhoser cave is known as John cave at Chhoser village upper Mustang. Cave has many rooms even can see temple and kitchen as well. Some of the room has windows as well, it offers amazing view of entire Chhoser village and Kaligandaki valley. The local believed there was war in 13th century, then local used Chhoser cave to skip from opponents.

Day 11 Lo-manthang to Yara village (3,800 m/12,467 Ft & 6-7 hrs trek)

As soon leaving from Lomanthang short ascend take us to ridge, it offers last finest view of Lo-manthang and plateau. This part of road often dusty because the jeep and motor bike drive same route till summit. After now take small crumbling trail on left of the main route, now trail continues on plateau regularly come cross nomad of sheep and goat. As trek unremitting will see snow-capped mountains Bhrikuti himal, Nilgiri, Damodar Himal, Sonam Himal, Karsang peak etc. After while trail leading descend to small Dhi village. We stop for lunch then we have scenic trek to Yara village.

Day 12 Yara-Ghara-Luri Gompa(4,005/13,136 Ft)-Yara village & 6hrs trek)

After breakfast set-off from Yara village with walking along the west bank of the river with observing natural erosion mount, then ascending up on crumbling trail to Ghara village. The key keeper of the Luri cave should travel with us from here. From now flatten trail lead with passing ruining-castle to bottom of cave. 4 storey Luri Gompa is situated on middle of cliff with few rooms. Upper two floor already not using any more but can climb by wooden ladder. Most of room has unbelievable antique murals and huge Kumbum. Physically fit travelers can explore many other cave in same cliff of Luri cave. Each year mount of Luri Gompa cut-off/destroying by natural destruction by heavy wind. Amazing view of the valley will be seen from window of Luri cave. Now we retrace to Ghara village then after lunch trek descend to Yara village.

Early morning we fly to Pokhara from Jomsom then do sightseeing arounf Pokhara. Jomsom to Pokhara drive also not to bad, it will be scenic drive even pass the deepest Kali Gandaki Gorge of the world.

Day 18 Pokhara to Kathamndu 20 minute flight or 7hrs drive

Kathmandu can be reach by flight or drive, 20 minute flight will offers breathtaking view of Himalayas and 7hrs drive will offers country side landscapes of Nepal.

First have breakfast at hotel then take your own time to see around, 3 hours before your flight schedule we transfer to international terminal of Tribhuwan International airport for onwards journey

Upper Mustang Trek Permits

Upper Mustang was forbidden for foreigner (travelers) till 1992 because of diplomatic and cultural issue then government of Nepal open it for international tourist. Upper mustang used to be less touristic area where hardy 1000 traveler have visited yearly but recent years around 8000 international tourist visit. According to ACAP check point at Kagbeni 470 tourist have watched 2017 Tiji festival which held on May at Lomanthang. Each trekker's need two trekking permits to do Upper Mustang trek which are special permits and Annapurna conservation Area project. ACAP permit cost U$D 20 per person for single entry. Special permits only permitted to get through government authorized trekking company of Nepal with admit necessary documents. Upper mustang trek restricted permit cost U$D 50 per person each day and should have 2 passport holder.

Complete Equipment Packing List for Upper Mustang Trekking

Upper Mustang trekking trail lead on the barren plateau and windy valley where temperature often stay above the +5 degree Celsius during the day from April to November. During the night temperature goes down but still stay in +Degree Celsius. But from last week of November to March is winter in Upper Mustang, the temperature often stay under -Degree Celsius. You need to pack proper wind resist jacket, pant and water proof trekking boots with light drying upper and lower body cloths for during the trek. You can buy good deal trekking stuff in Kathmandu which is cheap quality as well but as matter of quality trekking gear should buy from genuine trademark shop likely North face, Black yak, Quechua, Marmot etc for long term use.
