Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley trek is the latest trekking route in Annapurna conservation area. It is one of the hidden gems in the Annapurna region. Nar and Phu valley used to be one of the forbidden areas in the Annapurna conservation area after Upper Mustang Trek. The trek route was unexplored till early 2000, the government of Nepal opened this mysterious trekking route for western travelers in 2002. Since then few trekkers have trekked the Nar Phu valley and summit high up the virgin trekking peaks. Nar Phu valley trekking gives a great glimpse of living Himalayan culture, with its snow-capped towing high himal (mountains), boulder valley, stunning waterfalls and yak trail over the challenging Kong La Pass (5,280 m).

You will be accommodated at touristic hub in Thamel Kathmandu and easily to find the souvenir shop, multi cuisine restaurant and trekking gear shop. Even colorful local market is on walk able distance. During the trek in the mountain attached bathroom accommodation are available at Chemje, Bagarchhap, Koto and Chame. The basic accommodation available at Meta, Phu village, Naar and Ngawal village. Most of guesthouse have neat and clean bright room with twin sharing bed. Each room has big windows with cotton even can see mountain vista. The toilet always few steps away from bed room and two type of lavatory are available western and squat. Day 01: Arrival or meeting in Kathmandu (1,350 m/4,428 Ft)

Upon your arrival at the TIA in Kathmandu, we will be greeting you at arrival gate with your name on play cards. Then short drive to hotel, check in room. You many take a rest in the room or your guide will take you for short walk around the Thamel, many restaurant, handicraft and shops.

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation)

Guided tour will take you numerous places in the valley; a valley is confluence of cultural, historical, spiritual and foods. These places are listed in UNESCO world heritage sites, we will visit Pashupatinath temple a Hindu temple in midst of city, Swayambhunath a monkey temple, Kathmandu durbar square an ancient royal palace and home of living goddess Kumari. Then on evening your guide will check your trekking equipment list before packing for trek.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Chyamje (1,440 m/4,724 Ft 9-10 hour's drive)

We will leave early morning from hotel with packing breakfast (bread, fresh fruits, can juice) the bus departure at 7 am, you will see beautiful scenery of county sides with crest of Langtang Himalayan range and Ganesh himal. After Besishahar, drive continuous on dusty and coarse road with view of waterfall, paddies fields and villages of Chyamje.

Day 04: Trek from Chyamje to Bagarchhap (2,100 m/6,880 Ft & 6 hour's trek)

A short descend to suspension bridge over Marshyandi River then gentle ascending up through grassy hill with view of stunning waterfall to Taal, the village set bank of Marshyandi River and it dominant by misty steamy waterfall. Trek resume after cup of hot tea on gorge, now easy trail continuous bank of Marshyandi River and short sturdy up then back on easy trail to Dharapani. Then we cross river, avoid jeep track to Bagarchhap.

Day 05: Trek from Bagarchhap to Koto (2,530 m/8,300 Ft & 6 hour's trek)

As usual as we departure after breakfast from Bagarchhap, we cross the river avoid the jeep track passing Tache village then pass Dhanaque and ascend uphill in dense pristine forest to Timang village. Timang village is great viewpoint and get exceptional view of Mount Manaslu and other snow-capped peak. From Timang village trek along the jeep road and see great view of boulder.

Day 06: Trek from Koto to Meta 3,230 m/10,597 Ft & 7 hour's trek)

Koto village is confluence trekking trail of Nar Phu village-Kang La pass trek and Thorong La Pass. From here we are entering to Nar-Phu restricted area, only access with immigration restricted trekking permit. The trail follow on bank of Nar Khola even crossing stream which is falling down from boulder ridge, the thick forest of vegetation likely pine, fir and oak tree help you make cooler. We take a rest and make lunch break at Dharamsala (free shelter for travelers), from here nar phu trek continue uphill on the gorge to Meta village. Now we arrived unlike village and cultural than lower annapurna region, more similar with Tibetan.

Day 07: Trek from Meta to Phu village (4,160 m/13,648 Ft & 7 hour's trek)

The trek start after breakfast with pack lunch as well sufficient drinking water. The moderate trek path often take uphill and descending in different vegetation pristine forest without any human settlement. We pass ruined castle at Kyang, where Tibetan refugee spent certain period. From Kyang village crumble trail ascend up on the ridge to popular mountain village Phu.

Day 08: Acclimatization at Phu Village

Today is first acclimatization day on your trek and acclimatized with local altitude, you can choose yourself either you like to do make your day tougher or easier. If you willing to make your day easy walk around phu village. Phu village is located at height of 4,160 m at alpine territory, the village in very rich in their native culture of ethnic groups which is treasure of Phu village. It is Buddhist territory, local practice Buddhism in monasteries, gomba and home as well. Tashi Lakhang monastery is beautiful Buddhist monastery in Phu village, it is one of the remarkable old monasteries in Nepal, which is counted in 108 best Buddhist monasteries in around world. Then in other hand you can trek to view point, it offers great view of valley and massive view of Himalayas including Himlung himal and Annapurna ranges.

Day 09: Phu village to Nar village (4,110 m/13,484Ft & 5 hour's trek

As our trek begins, we trek down from Phu village with great vista of Himalayas and alpine territory. We often cross suspension bridge over Phu Khola and spring stream, traverse with Buddhist area where frequently see Buddhist stupa, chorten and praying flags. Before trek uphill short lunch break at Nar Phedi then the trail ascend on shrubs with presenting view of Pisang peak to Nar village.

Day 10: Trek from Nar village to Ngawal (3,650 m/11,972Ft & 9 hour's trek) via Kang La Pass (5,322 m/17,460 Ft)

Tough trek day in our journey leave an early morning from Nar village with energy bar and pack lunch. The trail is quite easy till Nar Phedi compare to rocky paved uphill trail above the Nar Phedi. Nar Phedi is yak grazing pasture where yak live over the year from here approximately 2 and half hours strenuous steady up with gorgeous view of white high mountain and valley to Kang-La Pass. The Kang-La summit offers superb view of panoramic Annapurna range and Marshyandi valley, now crambling trail drop down to Ngawal village. The immigration permits exit from the Kang-La pass and now trekking in Annapurna conversation area.

Day 11: Trek from Ngawal to Manang (3,540 m/11,316Ft & 4 hour's trek)

Ngawal village is the junction of the Nar Phu trek, from here can choose either short itinerary and return back to Kathmandu or externed the trek to Tilicho Lake and further up to Thorong-La pass then explore the Kaligandaki valley. So as you choosen continues trek on annapurna circuit. Today we trek to Manang village which takes only 4 hours. We take off beaten track from Ngawal to Manang via Mugji and ancient Braka village with great view of massive Annapurna range.

Day 12: Manang to Tilicho Base Camp (4,680 m/15,350Ft & 7 hour's trek)

The trek follow throughout the cluster mud village and buckwheat terrace agfter crossing the river gradual up trail bring us Khangsar village which last village in Manangdistrict. Now trail left village behind us and trek uphill on animal graze and visit Tare Gomba before arrive Shree Kharka. After crossing suspension bridge flatten trail begins, the cramble trekking trail is very small probalby 10 m lenth. Now trail became bit complicate while walking on paved sloppy mountain to base camp.

Day 13: Side Trek to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m/16,135Ft) and trek to Shree Kharka (3,870m/12,267Ft & 7 hour's)

Trek to Tilicho Lake from base camp is long sloppy climbing till 4,800 m, outstanding sunrise can see on high moutains including Gangapurna, Khangsar Kang and Tilicho peak. Now gentle trail continues on the moraine to the world highest glacier lake. Often get mountain refection on turquoises lake. We stop at tea shop and admire the dramatic spectacle lake with drinking hot tea. Now we trek down to Tilicho Base Camp and have brunch, after that we will have 3 hour's trek to Shree Kharka

Day 14: Shree Kharka to Leder (4,200 m/13,776Ft & 6 hour's trek)

From guesthouse we onward east direction with passing yak and goat graze. The gentle up trail takes us to small viewpoint and it offers massive view of Manang village, pisang peak, Annapurna III and leading trail to Thorong La on opposite side. We descend to Marshyandi river then cross river ascending up to Yak kharka, after lunch at yak kharka 1 hours trek to Leder.

Day 15: Leder to High Camp (4,840 m/15,875 Ft & 4 hour's trek)

Today we make our way to nearby thorong la pass called high camp at height of 4,840 m and next morning need to ascend nearly 600 m to summit of Thorong la. Thorong pass is one of the treasure of Annapurna circuit trek since it invented. It is quite light trek from high camp to thorong la pass relatively compare with thorong phedi. Travelers feel quite risky to sleep overnight at high camp but as long as you acclimatized well because have travelled through Kang la pass and Tilicho Lake.

Day 16: High Camp to Muktinath (3,800 m/12,467 Ft & 8 hurs trek) vs Thorong La Pass (5,416 m/17,764 Ft)

Another biggest day in Nar Phu-Annapurna circuit trekking after Kang la pass, Thorong la pass is most popular trekking pass in Nepal with providing great view of Manang and Marshyandi valley. As it tough trekking pass, we will begins trek early morning after breakfast, we very first walk on icy then ascending uphill passing first tea shop, you might feel more strenuous trekking to thorong la pass but amazing mountain vista are more recompenses. The summit is located in between two snow peak with seasonal teashop and with sign board which is colored with Tibetan flags. Next long descend to Muktinath with massive view of scorched Kaligandaki valley and towering white Himalayas. Reach Muktinath at late afternoon, can visit temple late evening or next morning. The temple of salvation is dedicate to god Narayan, a manifesto of lord Vishnu, it has 108 water tape and probably you will see some Hindus and Buddhist devotees taking bath here.

Day 17: Muktinath to Kagbeni (2,900m/9,523Ft & 5-6hrs trek)

From today morning beginning your trek in absolutely new territory in rain shadow landscapes. From Muktinath village take a west trail with avoiding jeep trail passing Jhong village and long walk on barren land to Kagbeni, later on side trip to Tiri village and back to Kagbeni.

Day 18: Kagbeni to jomsom (2,820m/9,249Ft & 3-hrs trek)

we pushed our self-do trek in morning before afternoon from Kagbeni to Jomsom, it called ghost valley because the Kaligandaki valley has such bad wind after 10 am in the morning. The gentle trail bank of river offers marvelous view of mount Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri and surrounding peak with wider landscapes of arid. Check in hotel at Jomsom and then do side to beautiful Marpha village.

Day 19: Jomsom to Pokhara (850m/2,780Ft & 20 minute) by flight

Jomsom to Pokhara flight normally schedule in the morning, it is completely mountain flight. The flight flew on Kali gandaki gorge with see amazing view of mount Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. as soon as arrive at Pokhara airport, transfer to hotel and take some rest, celebrate with friends and crew, come back in civilization world after 3 months being wild.

Day 20: Pokhara to Kathmandu (7-8hrs drive)

We are driving back to Kathmandu, it will be scenic drive to Kathmandu. the bus will stop few times on high way for toileting and eating. After arriving at Kathmandu bus station transfer to hotel and later an evening fare-well dinner with your guide.

Our journey in Nepal comes to an end today, your guide will take you to the international airport 3hours before you flight.

Nar Phu Trek duration depend on trekker’s either you prefer to make your trek short or long, if you want to make Naar Phu trek short then directly drive to Chamje, Dharapani or Koto then physically trek begins from here, ascending Phu and Nar village then retrace to Koto and drive back to Kathmandu. If you add 2 or 3 days more in your trip, trek can continues to Kang la pass then enter to Manang valley. From Ngawal trek descend pass beautiful pisang village to Chame then drive back to Kathmandu. Then if you plan to spend more than 3 weeks in Himalaya then Nar Phu valley trek begins from Bulbule with rapid ascending along lower section of Annapurna circuit trek after that follow Nar Khola and climb to Phu village and Naar village. From Naar village trek resume to tough Kang La pass, from summit of Kang La pass trek descend to Manang village. We will get attached bathroom at Manang, Pisang, Ngawal and Chame with internet. Yes, you need to be fit to do Nar Phu Trek because you doing trek in off the beaten high alpine and trek over Kang La Pass. The best way to train yourself for advance for trek strap a pack on your back and go hiking as long as you can with your trekking boot. By doing so your feet and joints will become accustomed to the constant walking you will face on the trek. Also be sure to hit the gym and run at least a month.
Yes you can do Nar Phu trek even scared of heights. The altitude symptom appears after 3,000 mtrs above sea level. We will begins trek from lower than 2,000 mtrs, it takes few days to reach at 3,000 m, by the time we reach alpine, you will be friendly and used with local environment.
Yes, you can prepare yourself at back home for demanding trek in advance. You can do regular jogging and other aerobic exercise at home, it will be very helpful during the trek. If you are fit and acclimatize, you can do Nar Phu Valley Trek without any problem..
Yes, there is ATM at Chame, Manang and Jomsom but it is not reliable. If you carry any currency with you either $/€/¥/£ travel cheque, it will be exchange but less value than commercial city like Kathmandu. If you prefer to carry cards with you, there is swap machine along the trail but 5% charge will be applicant on top of the total amount.
